The story
Blackstar was started by Martin Richards, who came back from Wellington in 2006 with roasting experience from Peoples Coffee and began, in the company's own telling, "roasting in the old footy sheds at Souths Leagues Club, under the Moreton Bay figs". The first roaster arrived in May 2007, the first wholesale customer followed in July, and the West End café opened in 2008 — built up through the neighbourhood and a stall at Davies Park Markets. Roasting has since moved to a purpose-built roastery in East Brisbane used for cupping, barista training and coffee events, and the company describes itself as "a 19-year pioneer of Brisbane's local roasting and barista culture".
