Riverside wildlife sanctuary at Fig Tree Pocket, home to more than 100 koalas and around 70 to 75 native Australian species, with free-range kangaroo feeding, daily talks and shows, and bookable koala encounters.

Book tickets online. Accessibility notes in the operator's own words: "Lone Pine sits on naturally hilly terrain, so not every slope is easily navigated in an unassisted wheelchair. Alternate routes are marked on our visitor map, and our team can help you plan a comfortable path." A limited number of manual wheelchairs can be hired at the Ticket Entrance for a $6 maintenance fee, booked ahead on (07) 3378 1366 or service@koala.net. Complimentary entry is offered for an essential support person or carer on presentation of a valid Australian Companion Card or equivalent. Certified guide, hearing and assistance animals are welcome in public areas such as the Riverside Café and outdoor lawn without prior arrangement; visiting the sanctuary grounds with an assistance animal must be pre-booked, is guided by a team member and is limited to two hours. There is a purpose-built, fully wheelchair accessible sensory garden beside the lorikeet feeding area and café.

The story
Established in 1927 and billed as "the world's oldest & largest koala sanctuary", Lone Pine sits about 12 kilometres from Brisbane's CBD on the Brisbane River. "We are lucky enough to be the caretakers of over 100 koalas and 75 species of native Australian animals. Many wild animals also call Lone Pine home, such as birds, snakes, lizards, insects, and possums." The sanctuary's stated mission is "To protect, respect, and conserve our environment and wildlife, by educating and connecting people with nature", and $1 from every koala experience ticket is donated to the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. Koala holding has not been offered at Lone Pine since 1 July 2024.
